New York City, February 1, 1875

Alva stood on the city sidewalk and sucked in a deep, triumphant gulp of air. The clock had just struck ten—the middle of the eve­ ning by New York City standards—and she was surrounded by elegantly dressed men escorting women dripping diamonds and rolled up tightly in furs. A few feet from her, the street was busy with carriages. She could smell the city: The damp fog, the sharp tang of refuse, the high floral notes of perfumed women. Horse dung.

Had she missed it? She wasn’t sure, although she knew she missed the steep, tangled streets of Montmartre already. But it was America that held her future now, even as it held her past. For a second her triumph was tempered by the remembrance of the thin envelope in her pocket, a few brief lines from her mother’s secretary, thanking her for her interest in visiting and regretting that Mrs. Rensselaer would be unable to see her. Alva knew her mother, likely even now sitting down to a stiff dinner with her husband and twelve of their closest friends fifty blocks away, did indeed feel regret. She just suspected it was about giv­ ing birth to her at all.

The restaurant door opened behind her, and, recalled to the moment, she signaled to the boy hailing cabs to find her one.

“Excuse me,” a deep voice said. “Mrs. Webster?”

Oh, for heavens sake. Couldn’t she stand outside for one min- ute without some intrepid lothario assuming she must be wait­ ing for him? In the less than seventy­two hours she’d been back in the States, she’d been propositioned eleven times. Twice by friends of her father’s.

She glanced over her shoulder at the man, receiving an in­ stant impression of big, though he stood mostly in the shadows. “I don’t know you,” she said, her voice flat. “Go home to your wife.”

“But I don’t have a wife,” the man said. He took a hesitant step towards her, leaving the shadows, and her eyebrows lifted. He looked more like a laborer than a man finishing a dinner at Delmonico’s, for all he was dressed in a suit and tie. Sort of dressed, she amended; the suit looked like it had been made for someone two inches shorter and two inches narrower across the shoulders. “Do I need a wife to talk to you? Is it a chaperone sort of thing? I have a mother, but she’s in Ohio.”

Alva blinked. “You’re not very good at this,” she observed. “I’m not a man, but I don’t think it’s standard behavior to invoke one’s mother at a time like this.”

They stared at each other in puzzlement. He was attrac­ tive in the sort of way she’d always imagined the heroes of west­ ern folktales to be: tall, broad shouldered, with a strong nose and a square jaw. He could stand to add barber to the list of people he needed to see, though, the one that started with tailor. Actually, looking at the way his dark blond hair fell into his eyes, she thought he’d better have it start with barber and go from there.

“There’s been a misunderstanding,” he said finally. “Perhaps if I introduce myself—my name is Professor Samuel Moore.”

He held out his hand. She looked at it, looked up at him, and did not extend her own. Bafflingly, he smiled at her, as though she’d done something rather clever.

Was he really a professor? He certainly didn’t look like one, not that it mattered, because she made it a policy, these days, never to talk to strange men—

“A professor of what?” she heard herself saying, although she was pleased it at least came out with a nice air of sarcasm and disbelief.

“This and that,” he said, still smiling. “Engineering, mostly.” She looked at his rumpled clothes. Yes, she could see that, one of those men who always had a tool in one hand and a grease can in the other. She didn’t know they were giving professorships out to men like that, but why not, after all? She was as apprecia­ tive of things like trains and working carriage wheels as the next person.

And now she’d gone and encouraged him. Stupid. “I see,” she said as coldly as she could manage. “Well, I’m not interested, so I’ll wish you good evening.”

“But how can you know if you’re not interested?” He shook his head in confusion, still smiling at her. The smile was . . . im­ pressive. “I haven’t even explained my proposition, yet.”

“I find that if you’ve heard one proposition, you’ve heard them all,” she replied. Stop talking to him, you idiot. “They’re not as unique as men would like to believe.”

“But—who else has approached you? Was it Langley, from Yale?” His tone turned plaintive. “How did he hear about this before me?”

“Langley—who?”

“Piers Langley,” he said. “No? I can’t think of anyone else reputable—look here, if you’ve been approached by anyone from that quack Santa Fe institute you should know they’re absolute frauds.”

“Institute?” Alva said faintly. “What on earth are you talking about?”

“Your house, of course. I hadn’t realized I was so behind on the news.” His face fell—What must it be like to let all your emo- tions float freely on your face?—but he nodded gravely. “If it’s Langley, though, he’s an excellent researcher, and a decent human, too.”

“It’s not Lang—what do you want with my house?” It was her turn to sound plaintive.

“But that’s what—” He stared at her, his brows crunched to­ gether. “Oh god. I wasn’t—I wouldn’t—”

To her astonishment, a distinct touch of pink appeared in his cheeks. He cleared his throat.

“I beg your pardon, ma’am. Henry warned me—that is, I shouldn’t have; my proposition is not of an intimate nature.”

“I’m coming to understand that,” she said.

“You thought . . . do men . . . they must—good lord.

She began to feel in charity with this befuddled giant. “In­ deed,” she said. “I quite agree. But I must ask again—what is it you want with Liefdehuis?”

“To study it,” he said. “One of my personal interests is in metaphysical energies, you see, and from what I’ve heard, your house may prove a most interesting case. Your ghost story is so recent, you know. I hardly ever hear one claiming to be that new—”

He broke off as she shook her head. “You almost had me con­ vinced that you were unlike the majority of your sex,” she said. “And now I see you are. I’m just not sure insanity is much of an improvement.”

To her surprise, he smiled again. “You’re not the only one who thinks so,” he said. The embarrassment had left his face; he was quite relaxed once more. A man who apologizes for a propo- sition and grins at an insult, Alva thought. Where did you come from, Professor Moore?

“And I’ll admit there’s no conclusive evidence yet,” he con­ tinued, “but what I have collected looks extremely promising. Certainly promising enough to warrant extensive study.”

A hint of cold pierced her thoughts. Firmly, she banished it. “You’re talking about ghosts,” she said.

“Maybe,” he replied. “Or I could be studying some kind of alien intelligence that just happens to concentrate in areas cor­ responding to local folklore.”

“Alien intelligence.”

Invisible alien intelligence,” he clarified. “At least invisible to the naked human eye. But ‘ghost’ is probably the easiest term.”

“Really.”

“People tend to go a bit strange when you talk to them about invisible alien intelligences,” he confided. “Which is odd, when you think about it, because why are the shades of one’s dead an­ cestors any less unsettling?”

She found herself nodding before the rest of her wits caught up with her. “No,” she said, not because the word corresponded with any particular question, but because she had the feeling the only way to survive here was to stick to very black­and­white words. His nuances were both compelling and sticky. “I’m afraid I won’t give you access. I don’t believe in ghosts, and I’m about to start several months’ worth of building work.”

“Don’t decide yet,” he begged. “I’m willing to pay you for the privilege, and I promise I won’t be in the way . . . although there is rather a lot of equipment, so I suppose—”

The boy hailing cabs caught her eye and gestured as a han­ som pulled up beside him.

“That’s mine,” she said. “I’m sorry I can’t help you. Good evening.”

“Wait!” he said. “I’ll—I’ll send you a letter. Henry said that was the way to do it—I’ll write you and explain more.”

“It won’t help,” she said as the cab boy helped her into the carriage. “I’m sorry. Good­bye, Professor Moore.”

Finally, he sighed acceptance and raised his hand. “Good evening, Mrs. Webster.”

As the cab pulled away from the sidewalk, though, she looked back at him, to find him staring after her with his hands shoved in his pockets and that apparently irrepressible grin back in place. An uncomfortable lightness expanded in her chest as she watched him standing head­and­shoulders taller than the passersby around him, looking back at her as though he would be perfectly happy never to look at anything else ever again.

What couldn’t I get, if I could look at people like that? she thought, and settled grumpily back against her seat.

Author Interview! Tiffany McDaniel – Author of The Summer That Melted Everything

I recently read and reviewed The Summer That Melted Everything by Tiffany McDaniel, you can see my review here. I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to interview Tiffany and get a little background info/behind the scenes look at the book and her writing process, plus a few other odds and ends. If you have not yet read The Summer That Melted Everything, I would definitely recommend it. Quoting from my recently posted review “This book was interesting and thought-provoking with what I thought was a very creative plot line. The characters were all complex and the story line was well-paced.” Definitely check this one out!

An Ohio native, Tiffany McDaniel’s writing is inspired by the rolling hills and buckeye woods of the land she knows.  She is also a poet, playwright, screenwriter, and artist.  The Summer that Melted Everything is her debut novel.

 

 

 

Below is the interview I had with Tiffany. My questions are in bold and her answers follow.

  1. When did you realize you wanted to be an author and did you have another profession before this?

Writing was the first thing I remember doing as a kid outside of any external influence or direction to do so.  I just knew I wanted to pick up a crayon and put down what was in my head.  As a kid with my ‘still learning to write ways’ it probably appeared to be scribbles to the nearest adult, but to me as a kid I was writing an entire story.  I came out of the womb drawn to story.  Reading it.  Creating it.  I wouldn’t realize it was something I could do as a career until much later, when I was in middle school.  The guidance counselor came in with her Rolodex of careers and we had to choose a  card listing the career we wanted.  I had no idea what card to pull out.  So the guidance counselor asked me what I liked to do.  I said, “I love to write.”  And she said, “Well, then you’ll be a writer,” and she pulled out the card and handed it to me.  I remember there was another girl in the class who also wanted to be a writer, so we had to share the career.  Only I wouldn’t let her have the card to hold.  There was something so powerful about it.  As if it was a physical key and I didn’t want to lose it for the door I felt was just right there.  I wonder about that girl in the class who wanted to be a writer too.  I hope she became one.  I hope she’s a bestseller right now, and I apologize to her for not letting her hold the card.

  1. For this book, did you work off of an outline while writing or did you just start writing and went where the story took you?

I never outline or write a synopsis.  I find that writing an idea down before hand causes the idea to lose its appeal to me.  I always start a novel with two things.  The title and the first line, always.  These two things determine the course of the story for me.  I never know the direction the story will take.  I just sit in front of my laptop and type.  Whatever I type that day ends up in the story.  The more you draft and chip away, the more the story takes shapes.  I never force anything out.  I let it come on its own and that works best for me.

  1. Give us some insight into Fielding as a character, what inspired you to create him?

I always say what inspires me are the characters themselves.  I’m inspired by them to tell their story.  It’s almost as if this is their own truth and I’m merely the vessel through which they tell this truth.

  1. Do you have any special rituals that you find yourself following when you’re writing? OR Take us through your typical work day.

I have no routine or schedule.  I know some authors try to write a certain number of words or pages in a day, or start at a certain time and finish.  I’m very ‘whenever.’  Sometimes I work on one chapter for several weeks.  Sometimes I can write several chapters in a week.  It’s really just what’s there at that moment.  I don’t have any rituals I follow.  I do try to avoid distraction when I’m writing.  The internet mostly.

  1. What do you do to cure writer’s block? Do you have issues with this often or hardly at all?

I’m a very superstitious writer, so I don’t talk about that which is mentioned above.  It’s almost like the Bloody Mary game.  If you say it’s name three times, it will appear.  So I just don’t speak of it.

  1. What (if any) research did you have to do for this novel? What was your favorite piece of research you did for this novel?

The Summer that Melted Everything takes place in 1984 so I had to research not just the year 1984, but also the decade.  Make sure I got it right socially, culturally, down to the way people dressed, the music they listened to, the television and film they watched.  Since this is early eighties and right on the cusp of the AIDS epidemic, I had to make sure I had the appropriate news headlines to correspond with the disease and at what point it was coming to the masses at that time.  It was really wonderful to travel back to the eighties.  I was born in 1985, so the eighties were not a decade I was living it up, dancing to the boom box and getting a perm in my hair, so it was fun to write about a time not our own.

  1. Do you find that you base any of your characters on people in your life? Have you gotten any inspiration for scenes in your novel from things that have happened to you in real life?

I don’t tend to base any character on a specific person in my life.  I think that’s dangerous territory, because the person you base that character on might not like the portrayal.  I always say the characters are their own people, and really they are.  This is their story.  This is what is happening to them, in as a real a way as their fictional universe will allow.

  1. How long did it take you to write this novel, from when you first put pen to paper to when it was published?

I wrote The Summer that Melted Everything in a month during the summer I was twenty-eight.  It wouldn’t be submitted to editors until I got a new agent in the autumn I was twenty-nine.  It sold that autumn to St. Martin’s Press.  I turned thirty during the publishing process.  And I’m thirty-one now when I’ll see the book released, so it takes a while to see a novel on the shelf, even after you have a publishing contract.  Before I got the contract for The Summer that Melted Everything, I worked for eleven years to get published, having written my first novel when I was eighteen.  Eleven years of rejection after rejection, and me fearing I’d never be published.  I feel very fortunate now to be in the position I am where I am about to see my novel on the bookstore’s shelf.  And I certainly sympathize with writer’s still on the journey to publication.  All I can say is to never give up.  It’s hard, but never give up. Are you working on any future books now?

  1. Are you working on any future books now?   

    I just finished the novel I hope to follow The Summer that Melted Everything up with.  This novel is titled When Lions Stood as Men.  It’s about a brother and sister escaping Nazi Germany.  They end up in Ohio, and while there try to survive in their own special way.  It’s a unique story I really can’t wait to share with readers.  I do have nine novels total, so I write all the time.  I’m just waiting for publishing to catch up to me.

  2. Are there any books or authors that have really influenced you and made you want to write? What about those authors inspired or influenced you?

I didn’t read the literary heavyweights until I was much older.  Donna Tartt, Shirley Jackson, Ray Bradbury, Toni Morrison.  I wouldn’t say anyone influenced or made me want to write.  Writing is just something I’ve always done and been drawn to do.  But the writers listed above are definitely some of my favorite authors to read.  Especially Shirley Jackson and Ray Bradbury.  I also love the poetry of James Wright.  If you’ve never read his poetry, you’re missing out some of the  shiniest stars in the sky.

  1. Have you read anything lately that you loved?

I waited a long time to read Peter Pan and Wendy by JM Barrie.  Mostly because of the Disney version.  I just never really cared for the Disney Peter Pan movie and I thought that’s what the actual novel was going to be.  It’s definitely not the Disney story.  JM Barrie’s prose is beautiful and the story so melancholic.  It is so much more the ‘children’s story’ it is billed to be.  It’s honestly one of the saddest books I’ve read.

  1. What do you like to do in your spare time?

I read of course, a great deal.  I garden.  We always had gardens growing up so the message to work from the land was instilled in me from a very young age.  Right now in the garden there’s paw-paw trees, cherry trees, blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes, okra, zucchini, corn, broccoli, peppers, the list goes on and on.  I’m pretty into gardening, hope to have a greenhouse one day.  I also really like to bake.  Breads and pies mostly.  I think my crumb-top rhubarb pie is probably the best in the world, but I’m biased and I’m sure I am also sorely mistaken.

  1. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Like I said, never give up.  The eleven years it took me to get published was heartbreaking and oftentimes emotionally devastating as it is for most writers.  Being told over and over again that I was not publishable, or commercially relevant to publishers, that’s  a hard thing to hear.  The genre I write, which is literary fiction, is very difficult to break into, especially if you’re a female literary fiction writer.  So if you’re looking to get published, just remember you are worth it to yourself to keep trying.  Query all the agents there are, draft and re-draft your novel if you have to but don’t ever lose yourself.  And NEVER give up.  I do have a ‘pay it forward’ mindset with aspiring writers.  Meaning I never turn an author down who asks me for help.  I only ask that once they get published they do the very same thing to another author and pay forward the help and kindness.  We have to help each other out or we’ll go insane.

  1. What do you hope people are taking away from your stories? Do you have any particular messages you are trying to convey to readers?

When I was a kid, we didn’t have a lot of extra money.  So I’d go into the bookstore and I knew I could only get one or two books.  Books are not terribly expensive, but they are expensive if you don’t have a lot of money.  So I had to hope the books I chose would be well worth the money.  I remember how disappointing it was to have spent money on a book that ended up being not very good.  So that’s what I strive for.  That readers have in me an author they feel good about spending their hard-earned money on.  That they’ve bought a book they can close and say, “Well, that was worth the money after all.”

  1. Is there anything else about you that you’d like your readers to know?

That readers have all the power.  With books like mine, there’s not going to be a lot of marketing put forth as say a publisher would do with the Stephen King’s of the world.  So the novel’s success comes down to word of mouth.  It’s really up to readers.  If they like the novel, I hope they talk to people about it, and share the name of the book.  Especially with a debut novel, it all comes down to readers.  They determine your life as a writer in more ways than one.  No writer becomes a career author by herself.  My only hope with this novel and my others to follow is that readers like what they’ve read and they can honestly say, “I’m really glad I read The Summer that Melted Everything.  I’m going to tell all my family and friends about it!” Please do!

My rating: 3.25 stars out of a scale of 5

My review: This book will count for the challenge I am participating in for April, the#ReadingMyLibrary reading challenge. I checked out this book from the Simsbury Public Library. I’ve seen this book in a number of recent book review publications and it was listed as #11 on Amazon’s Best Books of February 2015 listing. Going into this book, I knew that it was not going to be a happy-go-lucky book. This was an odd book for me. From the beginning of the novel, you can feel the narrator’s guilt. It is confusing at first trying to discover whether the narrator was the actual criminal in the act that would forever alter Lindy Simpson. After learning of the narrator’s character through the story though, it is hard to imagine him capable of rape. The book alternates between memories from before and after Lindy’s rape, centering around our narrator’s experiences with his family and with Lindy herself.
There were a lot of profound thoughts that this adult narrator looking back on his teenager self is realizing or just now articulating. His description with his mother and father, who are divorced, as well as how he deals with his sister’s death, are thought-provoking. His description of realizing that weakness lives in both his parents is something every child realizes as they grow and have to realize that a weakness lies within all of us. One of the thoughts from the book that really stuck with me is when the author states that he finds it amazing how little information children have to work with on a daily basis, or something to that effect. It really is entirely true. Children have to operate on a daily basis with less information that adults because the adults in their life are (hopefully) trying to shield them from the harsh realities of the world.
The whole story is told in the first person through the view of our narrator and I found it really amazing that looking through the narrator’s eyes as a teenager, I could connect so well and see the hormonal ups and downs and emotional rollercoaster that the narrator was just trying to survive during this awful period of time in Lindy’s life.
I thought this was overall a very interesting book. It deals with some very heavy issues though so I would say that readers definitely need to have the mental maturity to handle those issues that are introduced in the story.

The bottom line: A little dark but I think contains some very important thoughts, I would recommend with a precaution. You read about the aftermath of how a neighborhood deals with a girl’s rape. It is harsh. Just be prepared. Not for kids.

The eightieth book I read in 2014 was The Divorce Papers by Susan Rieger. This book is Rieger’s debut novel. I finished this book on 9/8/14. I rated this book 5 stars out of a scale of 5. This book centers mostly around Sophie Diehl, a criminal attorney at a firm in New England. Sophie is asked to do a favor for one of the partners in her office and complete the intake interview for a prominent client’s daughter who was just served with divorce papers by her husband of eighteen years.

As the story develops, we are brought into not only Sophie’s life but also the Durkheim’s and the Meiklejohns’. Told through emails, handwritten letters, memos and legal motions and other documents, this story of divorce and Sophie’s part in it is both riveting and fascinating. As Sophie struggles her way through litigating this divorce (she’s a criminal attorney, not a divorce attorney) she also tries to overcome how much this divorce reminds her of her parents own divorce. She begins to realize how traumatized she was by that experience, so much so that seeing The Durkheims’ daughter Jane go through the same process is heart-breaking to her.

And as Sophie continues to help her client (Mia) through the divorce as best she can, Sophie also has to deal with what has become a relationship issue as well. During the story she meets a man named Harry and forms an attachment to him. Little does she know that he isn’t exactly available. Sophie also deals with her issues with her parents, after an embarrassing encounter and follow-up email to her boss.

Overall, this was just such a great book. I know not many people enjoy books written in this style (epistolary) but I find them to be extremely interesting and fun. Though a little confusing at the beginning, once you get into the story its easier to get a hang of who the players are in this book. I thought Sophie’s character had great depth and I loved diving into her psyche. And Mia’s character was just perfect, she was hilarious and her jumble of emotions was portrayed excellently. While I might not recommend this book to everyone since the style might not be suited for all, I loved this book and was hooked pretty much from beginning to end. I didn’t want to put it down! I hope to see more from this author in the future, very well done!!

1. Is Sophie a good lawyer? Why? Why not?
